How to settle my dog's stomach when he's throwing up and lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old | 80 lbs

Sonnie woke up and threw up, the a couple hours later couldn't keep water down. He eventually was able to drink and keep it down, has not eaten today. He has been lethargic too. Is it possible he has a stomach bug? What can I do to help settle his stomach?

Poor Sonnie! It could be that he is suffering from a GI illness, but it could also be due to eating something rotten, pancreatitis, a systemic illness, or something more serious such as kidney disease, liver disease, or other organ disease. Given that he is now able to keep down water, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor Bohdi. Unfortunately there are no photos attached to your post. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
