My senior long-haired cat throws up often. Is it thyroid or hairballs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 15 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

15 y.o. long hair rescue male cat throws up every couple of days--sometimes a hairball other times projectile. Much grooming & sometimes using random spots as litter box (our wood floors and oriental rug-ugh). Yr ago had chemo for thyroid cancer but ok now. Any idea why he keeps throwing up?

Mithril is gorgeous. Thank you for including pictures. If the vomiting is new, then I think the first thing I would recommend is to have your veterinarian check his thyroid level. Vomiting is one of the signs we can see with thyroid disease and although the radiation treatment is very good, sometimes cat can develop problems in the future, so we need to monitor blood work. Depending on those results, your veterinarian may recommend something for the hairballs. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
