My dog has a bleeding lump on her lip. Should I worry about cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old | 70 lbs

My 13 yr old pit bull has a large lump/tumor on the outside, bottom corner of her lip. It showed up one day, quite large, and has only grown a little bit. It bleeds and looks awful. Could this be cancer?

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry that Casino is having this issue. Yes, that could definitely be cancer. I suggest you take Casino to your vet to have that checked out. Squamous cell carcinomas are common in/around the mouth. So, it could be that but it could also be just a benign mass. You need to have it tested to know what it is. Definitely talk to your vet about your options. Hope this helps and I will keep my fingers crossed that it is benign. Best wishes.
