Which dog breeds are least likely to run away when off-leash?

I'm asking on behalf of My friend who can't decide from a chow chow or sharpei he lives on land that use to be a farm but there aren't and anjmals there anymore hes basing his decision on wanderlust which dog is less likely to run away he wants to be able to let it out without a leash and would stay on his farm without running away

I can tell you from experience that a Chow Chow would not be a good idea! I have a Chow, and they are terribly difficult to train because they are so stubborn. When she gets the chance to be off leash, she will take off and not come back. I can't tell you how many times I've had to chase her down. Sharpeis are also very stubborn dogs and hard to train, so I would not recommend that breed either. Your friend needs a dog that is easy to train so he can take them off leash. I'd recommend a Golden Retriever or a Lab. I hope this helps!

I couldn't quite decipher what you were asking about with the chow chow or shar pei, but can give some comments about keeping a dog outside. My experience is similar to yours in regard to allowing a dog free-range. Dogs are very territorial and do not like to wander too far outside of their home unless necessary. Ensuring the dog is desexed, has a good shelter, has adequate food and plenty of water will usually keep a dog from wandering off and getting lost. In my experience, hounds are more likely to run away than any other breeds. I think 570 acres is plenty of room for a dog and it's unlikely that they will run away as long as they have been there long enough to know it's their home. I would avoid setting the dog loose right away in a new home, because they may run off in search of their old home. I hope that answers your question well. Small dog breeds tend to run away less then large breed, but this is a very general statement and it can't guaranty in any way that your dog will stay on your property regardless of the breed. you do have plenty of options, these are just examples: jack Russel, Pug, Maltese, Pomeranian, French Bulldog.

Based on your desires I would recommend a Labrador or Golden retriever. They are eager to please dogs and so easier to train than huskies or hounds and tend to stay close. They also have less of a prey drive than some of the other breeds so less of a risk to your other pets though every dog can be different, I had labs growing up with rabbits and birds and little creatures and they did not harm them.

I recommend a Great Pyrenees or other livestock guardian dog. They learn the farm boundaries and the animals and people in the household and stay around to protect everything. They are gentle and prefer to live outside. They will become protective if one of their ‘family’ is in danger only. Many breeds, as you are aware, are more hunting oriented and will take off and follow a scent or go exploring when they want. Huskies as a breed love to run off and chase things and go exploring. Yes if they are indoors and do not get enough exercise or mental stimulation they are more likely to run off. You have been lucky with yours though as many huskies never stay home. I would encourage your friend to increase the exercise and give their dog more outdoor time running or walking on a leash. If they let him off the leash I would use a GPS collar on him so they can find him and get him back. There is always a risk of injury when dogs run loose. We have a huge fenced in dog kennel about 30 feet from our house and our dogs go in it to use the bathroom. But when we take them out without leashes they run away. We already tried electric collers. Building a fence to the kennel is not an option. H
If your dogs are not off-leashed trained then I recommend not taking them off the leashes. You can hire a trainer to see if they can train your dogs to become off leash trained. They would be the best ones to help you. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

I have a 3 year old Lab could he be trained not to run off when not on the leash?
Some dogs no matter how you try cannot be trained off the leash. There are a lot of dangers when you have your dog off leash and it is recommended to keep them on. I would also recommend checking with local leash laws since most places you are not supposed to have them off leash. Some dogs no matter how hard you work with them to have them go off leash, they just cannot be trusted off leash. You can start with a short leash and treats in your pocket. Let him have some lead and then call him back and him Max a treat. Little by little letting him have more freedom and see if he comes back. If it is going to work it will take time. I never truly recommend having your dog completely off leash because if something catches their eyes, ears or nose they sometimes will not come back because they are so focused on something. I always caution people when trying to do this. Otherwise, I would work with a trainer to help. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. It sounds like Toffee may not know his boundaries well, and assumes he can run everywhere once he's outside. I recommend training him on a leash to show him where his boundaries are. For example, walk him on a leash around the perimeter of your property, and never beyond. You can make him sit at the edge of your property, and give him a treat. Do this at multiple points around your property. Since he has run off before, he may not learn the true edge of his property. The safest thing to do is to take him out on a leash and not let him run freely. He is otherwise at risk of getting lost, or even hit by a vehicle. I hope this is helpful.

I accidently droped the leach while a biker passing by and my dog start running and geting away from me and everytime i yell to her she start running more and then it was so close for her to get run by a car but in the end i was able to catch her aft
Oh no! How scary! To prevent this from happening, you need to have very consistent recall from your pup at all times, in all circumstances. Dog training classes help teach you these skills, because it's all about you being consistent.
