My 5-month-old cat's first vet visit: What vaccines before neutering?

My cat is about five months old and I'd like to get him neutered, but he's never been to the vet before. Which vaccinations are required or recommended at his age, and what does he need before he can be neutered?

Great question, and good on you for wanting to get Lucchese neutered and vaccinated! Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine. If he is an outdoor cat, the FeLV vaccine (feline leukemia) should be considered. You can get him vaccinated at the same time as getting neutered, so I would make an appointment with a local vet to get these procedures done. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! In the US we tend to neuter male cats around 6 months of age. There is no reason why you can't wait unless he is spraying or marking in your house. He needs 2 FVRCP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart and a Rabies vaccine. If he is over 12 week get the first FVRCP and Rabies and then have him neutered in 3-4 weeks and have them give the 2nd FVCRP before he goes home. I recommend the topical flea products like Bravecto or the Seresto collar. I wish you the best!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question. Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine. If they are outdoor cats, the FeLV vaccine (feline leukemia) should be considered. Some vets like to give rabies at an appointment separate from the other vaccines, usually given two weeks after those vaccines. It will be up to their vet to decide when to give them. I have a 6 month old kitten who needs her first vaccination. I was wondering if the combination vaccine is appropriate for her or if she's too old for it.. I've never had a kitten this old not be vaccinated
If Asha has never had any vaccinations before, she would need three total vaccines at this point - FVRCP (for feline distemper, along with several common respiratory viruses in cats), feline leukemia, and rabies. The FVRCP and leukemia vaccines often come as a combination vaccine, although they can also be given separately - either option would be fine :) The FVRCP and leukemia vaccines will also need to be boostered in three weeks. After that, both they and the rabies vaccine will be good for at least a year, or possibly longer depending on your veterinarian's typical vaccine protocol.

Simba is old enough to have his rabies vaccine now. He should also finish his other vaccines as well. Cost does vary depending on where you live and if you visit a vaccine clinic or a normal, in-room veterinary appointment. Low cost neuters may be available in your area or you may go to a regular clinic. There are differences in the techniques, sedation protocols and pre-op work up. General clinics will cost more for a neuter because they do a work up )to ensure kidneys are normal..etc) where as low cost clinics don't. If she is a warrior kitten, then Artemis is great name for her! Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a rabies vaccine. At four months of age, she will need two rounds of each vaccine given four weeks apart. You should do the FVRCP vaccine first, then two weeks later the rabies vaccine. The second FVRCP vaccine should be done four weeks after the first one, and the same goes for the rabies vaccine. It's not recommended to give the FVRCP and rabies together at the same time. Have plenty of toys for her to play with, and get interactive toys so you can play with her. I hope this helps!

What type of vaccination is needed for my cat
Puss is very cute! All cats need a Rabies vaccination. Otherwise if he hasn't had one already I would get the FVRCP vaccination. (https://www.purina.com/articles/cat/health/fvrcp-vaccinations) some more information. If Feline Leukemia is in your area and he is going to go outside I would also recommend testing having your veterinarian vaccinate him with this. If this is the first time he is getting any vaccinations then the Rabies is only good for one year, while the FVRCP and Feline Leukemia vaccinations need to be boostered in 3-4 weeks. If a cat has had no shots and the cat is 9 months old, what all would it need besides rabies?
She should have a 4-way vaccine now (FCRP, or something similar) along with a feline leukemia vaccine - these will both need to be boostered in 3-4 weeks, then again in one year. She does also need a rabies vaccine - this is a single vaccine that does not need to be boostered, so it will also be good for a year.

Excellent question. The main vaccination(s) they need are: 1) FVRCP- a combo upper respiratory vaccine. 2) And if they go outdoors they should get the FeLV (leukemia) vaccination, which is an infection that is spread through drinking water. 3) Then of course the Rabies vaccine, if it is required in your state. The FVRCP and Rabies vaccine can be given once a year for the first year, then once every 3 years. The FeLV vaccine is given yearly.

what are all the vaccines the cat must have and what age should they be given?
Core vaccines for cats are the FVRCP vaccine (rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia). This vaccine is started between 6-8 weeks and repeated every 3-4 weeks until the kitten is 16 weeks old (usually 3-4 shots total). Rabies vaccine is administered between 12-14 weeks. Vaccinating for FeLV is optional but recommended for cats that will be outside. This is commonly done around 12 weeks of age and repeated in 3-4 weeks. I also recommend deworming kittens at the time of each vaccine. Boosters of all vaccines are done again in 1 year.
