My cat was constipated and now has bloody stool. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat with a dislocated hip has been constipated for a few days. Today he finally pooped but it was very bloody and it seemed as if his rectum was bleeding badly. Should I be concerned?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Co! Stool that is hard and sits in the colon for a while can have blood on it. If it was hard then you should contact your Vet to discuss medications to help soften the stool. If the stool was diarrhea then he may need antibiotics. If the blood persists get in touch with your Vet. I hope this helps!
