I'm adopting a new puppy. What vaccinations does a 6-week-old need?

Hi I’m new to adopting a puppy I’ve had dogs growing up but I’ve never dealt with the vaccinations. I’m interested in getting a 5/6 week old beagle. If you can provide me information on the vaccinations that would be great. Thank you.

Great question and good on you for getting your puppy her vaccines! She will need her DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza) and rabies vaccine. I will put the schedule below, and keep in mind each vaccine has to be given four weeks apart: DHPPi 6-8 weeks of age: First vaccine 10-12 weeks of age: Second vaccine 14-16 weeks of age: Third vaccine Ten days after the third vaccine, she will be fully vaccinated and have immunity against those diseases. She will need a booster of the DHPPi in a year after the third vaccine. Rabies 12-14 weeks of age: First vaccine 14-18 weeks of age: Second vaccine After this, she will be fully vaccinated against rabies and will need a booster a year after the second vaccine. I hope this helps! It's fine to start her on her vaccines at six weeks of age.

Congratultions on your puppies! We normally start vaccinating at 6 to 8 weeks of age. At 6 weeks of age we can start what some call the "distemper vaccine" or the "DAPP" (helps protect against Distemper, Canine Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza). The Bordetella vaccine is normally given after 8 weeks of age and the Rabies vaccine after 12 weeks of age. Hello my doberman puppy is 40 days old so what all vaccine i should give and at what age and anti rabies when should i be giving her?
Great question! At 40 days of age, Daisy is just over 5.5 weeks old, so she is not old enough for her first vaccines. Puppies should be at least 6-8 weeks of age, and I would wait at least another 4 days before giving her the first vaccine. She will need a DHPPi, which protects again distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. She will need three series of the DHPPi vaccines each given four weeks apart. The schedule would be: 1st shot at 6 weeks of age, 2nd shot at 10 weeks of age, and final shot at 14 weeks of age. In terms of rabies, that should not be given until she is 12 weeks old, and she will need two of the rabies vaccine given four weeks apart. She should therefore get the first rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age and the second at 16 weeks of age. She will need a booster of both DHPPi and rabies at a year old. The vet can discuss the schedule of boosters after that with you. I hope this helps!

I have 5 week old puppies and am wondering when I should get their first shots and what they would include. They are German shepherds.
Around 6-8 weeks of age, they should get their first Distemper Parvovirus Adenovirus 1 and 2 (Hepatitis) Parainfluenza vaccine and Bordatella Kennel cough vaccine. They will need a Distemper booster every 3 weeks with the last one being given when they are at least 14 weeks old. The Rabies vaccine is generally given at 14 weeks of age but can be given as early as 12 weeks. Other vaccines that your vet may recommend include lepto, lyme and influenza, all of which require boosters 3 weeks after the initial dose. In addition to vaccines the puppies should be dewormed and checked for intestinal parasites via a fecal exam. Congrats and good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Pd and Jacky are adorable! DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, Parvo and Parainfluenza) vaccines are started around 7-8 weeks of age and are given every 3-4 weeks until 2 are given past 12 weeks of age. So they usually get 3-4 DHPP vaccines. If they are over 12 weeks already then they should get TWO DHPP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart. The 2nd vaccine is good for 1 year. The following vaccines are good for 3 years. In the US the rabies vaccine is give around 12-16 weeks of age. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If this puppy was born on April 13th, then she is too young to have gotten any vaccines. She will be five weeks of age when you get her, and puppies are not old enough to be first vaccinated until they are six to eight weeks of age. I would make an appointment with a vet for a week after you get her to start her vaccines. She will not be fully vaccinated until she has three series of her DHPPi combination shot (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) each given four weeks apart. Until that time, she should not be allowed in public, do not take her for walks, and only have her potty in your backyard. She will be susceptible to catching parvo and distemper until she is fully vaccinated, and since those are so deadly, you want to avoid it. The vet will go over the vaccine schedule with you, and discuss getting her rabies vaccines as well (that is required by law). Other vaccinations such as Lyme disease, leptospirosis, or Bordetella (kennel cough) may also be needed depending on what is common in your area and your dog's risk of exposure - your veterinarian should be able to talk more with you about this to decide if any additional vaccines are needed.

I will be adopting a dog from a friend who's unable to take care of him but the only shots he's had are rabies and he's 19 weeks old so will he need 1 shot of the combo or 3 shots every 4 weeks
Since the puppy is getting a late start on the other vaccines, you will not need to do as many. The series of 4 is usually when the vaccines are started at 6-8 weeks and the immune system is just developing . I would recommend a series of 2 DHLPP vaccines with the injections being done 3 weeks apart. Your pup may also benefit from a kennel cough vaccine which can be done with the same schedule. Your puppy should also have been dewormed and it is time to start heartworm prevention, so getting him an appointment with your vet can get you started on all of these things he needs.

Congratulations on your new pup :) If she hasn't had anything done yet, she will need a vet visit for her first DAPP vaccine (for distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza) as well as a general wellness check-up. She should also have a fecal exam for parasites, and should be dewormed if any are found. She's also old enough to start on heartworm prevention if this is a problem in your area - the vet should be able to advise you if this is needed. After that, she will need to have her DAPP vaccine boostered every 3-4 weeks until she's 16 weeks or older. She will also need a rabies vaccine at 16 weeks. Other vaccinations, such as Lyme disease, leptospirosis, or Bordetella (kennel cough) may also be recommended depending on what is common in your area and her risk of exposure. Your veterinarian should discuss this with you at her check-up visit, and will let you know if any of these vaccines are needed.

Puppies need vaccinations every 3-4 weeks starting at 8 weeks of age until 16 weeks of age. She needs the DH2PP (5 in 1) three times, the kennel cough vaccine (bordetella) at least twice and rabies just once. They don't get rabies until the last set of vaccinations at 16 weeks of age. There are other vaccinations that she may need depending on her lifestyle (leptosporosis, lyme, influenza) but you will need to discuss that with your vet. Yes, you should be careful taking Honey around any other dogs with unknown or incomplete vaccination status until she is fully vaccinated at 16 weeks of age. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
