My cat is pooping bloody, soft poop outside the litter box. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

My cat is older, he is about 7 years old. I rescued him last year and he instantly knew how to use a litter box and has never had an accident. Three days ago he pooped right next to his litter box and it was bloody at one end and much softer than normal. I switched to white cooked organic chicken for a few days and today he had two bowel movements followed by anal leakage that was green

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Having accidents outside of the litter box often times points out a medical issue like diarrhea. Diarrhea or soft stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Sirius evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
