Why is my diabetic dog disoriented and lethargic after insulin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 13 years and 9 months old | 18 lbs

Dog was diagnosed with diabetes 3 weeks ago. Was started on 2 units insulin, then a glucose curve was done and they changed it to 3 units, both twice daily. He seems disoriented, like he's drunk. He's lethargic, has lost a lot of weight and muscle. He still drinks and pees as much as before I had him diagnosed, but it's like he's not ' there' now. He just fell in the pool. He bumps into things. Aside from drinking a lot and peeing so much, for the first time ever in the house, he was himself bef

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the clinical symptoms you are describing, I am concerned that the blood sugar is too low. I would recommend giving a tablespoon of Karo syrup on the gums and taking him to the veterinarian to be examined. I am also concerned that the diabetes maybe unregulated to the point that he has developed diabetic ketoacidosis which is a condition that develops in unregulated diabetic patients. Either way, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him as soon as possible so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further
