Adopting a dog treated for anaplasmosis/ehrlichia: long-term?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello - I'm in the process of adopting a dog and was informed that he tested positive for anaplasmosis and ehrlichia disease from previous tick bites. They've since treated him with doxycycline and he's completed the treatment. I'm just wondering if there are any long-term implications of these diseases or any considerations I should have before adopting. He's 1-2 year old, corgi mix.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As long as your dog has been treated and is now healthy, there should not be any long term effects of the infection. However, in the future, testing for these infections may be difficult, as false positive results are possible. Your dog may be a carrier of Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichia life long, but this disease is not transmitted to humans. You should be careful if you are planning to, or have, another dog. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Ehrlichia does not typically result in any long term effects if treated appropriately. A 30 day regimen of doxycycline typically does the trick. The dog may show positive on an ehrlichia test for the remainder of its like since it will always carry antibodies to the disease. However, in the absence of clinical signs, this is not something to worry about usually. If you like this dog, I don't think you should allow this previous disease to influence your decision of adopting it. Go for it!
