Why is my indoor cat always sick? Could it be Feline Leukemia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 12 lbs

I have a four year old Persian cat and ever since she was little she’s been getting UTIs and has been taken to the vet for the same problem over the course of her life. She’s on a great food which has really helped reduce the number of UTIs that she gets but I notice she gets sick a lot.. she loses appetite a lot, and gets constipated a lot. She’s 100% an indoor cat and is the only cat in my house. One of my biggest concerns is Feline Leukemia... Could this be a possibility of her feeling sick?

Wow! Moo is a beautiful cat! Feline Leukemia Virus predisposes to certain types of cancers but does not usually impact urinary health. You might be thinking of FIV (the HIV of cats). This DOES depress the immune system and could predispose Moo to more frequent infections. However, if Moo has always been an indoor-only, single cat, both of these are very unlikely. Luckily, there is a simple test that screens for FIV and Feline Leukemia that only requires a few drops of blood and about 10 minutes. Almost all vets carry this test so schedule an appointment to put your mind at ease. Best of luck to you and Moo!
