Why is my pet turtle's eye swollen and red? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My turtle sheldon has a very swollen left eye. Both of his eyes are red but the left is very swollen and he is hardly opening it. I’ve had the same tank set up (basking, temp, cleanliness, etc.) for 3 years so there haven’t been any changes. I have two turtles in the tank and the other is fine. I don’t know what’s wrong with him please help. I have a picture of his non swollen eye, his swollen eye open, and his swollen eye closed. The swollen eye is very soft, not hard.

If it is just one eye, it is likely due to trauma or injury. He may have hit it on tank furniture or the other turtle may have injured him. Confirm proper environmental parameters, keep the water clean and consider separating him until he has recovered. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet in case he needs medication.
