My dog's nipple is swollen. What's the cause, and is it serious?

Thank you for proving a picture of Hugo! It looks like one of his nipples is swollen. This could be due to trauma. He could have injured that area, and he now has a hematoma. It could also be an infection, which could be caused if he received a bite from another animal. It could be a reaction to an insect bite, such as an allergic reaction. Finally, it could be a fungal infection. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain so I do recommend it getting checked out by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling and how best to treat it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

He may have been licking his nipple which would have possibly made it swell. However it is also possible that this is hormonal problem or even an infection. If the nipple keeps growing, or turns red or hot or starts discharging fluid, then you should take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am afraid that while this could be an extra unilateral nipple, it actually is most likely a cutaneous mass. This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

Hello, Our dog was abused before my family got her -meaning she's horrible to strangers- so going to a Vet isn't really an option. Two days ago I noticed that one of her bottom nipples was swollen. I'm curious if there's anything we can do to help.
You can apply a warm compress to it to help with pain and swelling. She will need to go to a vet to have it checked as it may be an infection or a growth. If she is nervous or anxious then i would call and see what arrangements can be made to minimize her stress. Such as medication for anxiety prior to travel or not waiting in the lobby with other dogs and people but maybe and exam room or the car until they are ready for you.

My puppy has injured one of her nipples due to which its swollen and has a red clot on the top and the nipple has acquired a pinkish tinge. What should I do ?
If there is any green or yellow discharge coming from the nipple, or the puppy is painful or acting lethargic, a visit to the vet is recommended. If not, you can try cleaning the area with a mild soap or Hibiclens (available at many drug stores) and monitoring the area closely. If your puppy is biting/licking the area, then an e-collar (cone-shaped collar) may be needed to stop this and allow the area to heal. If the nipple does not return to normal within a few days, or if it begins to look more swollen, continues to bleed, has pain, or your puppy is lethargic, seek veterinary care. Two of his nipples are a little irritated, he’s a 4 month old mix, 2 of them look like ant mounds instead of just nipples like the rest. And they’re cut up a little bit it looks like, if this is normal or just from playing rough, cool, but if it’s so
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! At least in these pictures, it does not look severe and I think this could have been from some form of mild trauma. I think it would be ok to monitor him at this point. If this has not gotten better in the next week or so, it may best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi There! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It probably was due to mild trauma (such as from scratching). Given how it looks, it will likely heal on its own without much treatment if you leave it alone and prevent your pup from licking or chewing at it. Good luck!

My Ship Tsu nipper was swollen and now it is bleeding. I am trying to find the money to take her to vet but she needs immediate attention. What could it be?
Patience could have a mammary tumor causing the swelling and bleeding to her nipple, she could have sustained trauma to it, or if she had puppies recently, she could have mastitis (an infection of the mammary glands). You are correct that she needs to see a vet as soon as possible. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. My male dog has a really swollen nipple its quite big hes 9 years old i really carnt afford the vets is there anything i can do . Thank you
I am sorry to hear about Archie. Possible causes for this could include infection, abscess, or tumor. Unfortunately none of these causes are really treatable with at home care. If the area is growing rapidly, is painful or hot to the touch, or your dog is lethargic/not eating/uncomfortable then these are signs he should be seen right away. If he seems unbothered by the area and it isn't growing rapidly, you could try applying warm compresses for 10 minutes a few times a day. If it is an abscess this may help it come to a head and drain. Clean around the nipple well with a mild soap or antiseptic such as Hibiclens in case there is a superficial infection and apply a topical antibiotic such as Polysporin. If the area isn't getting smaller or is increasing in size, then vet care is needed. You may consider seeing if there is a low-cost vet clinic in your area. Some Humane Societies/Animal Protection Leagues/etc. have low-cost clinics for those who cannot afford a full service veterin

My dog has swollen nipples and seems sick
There are a couple of things that could be wrong with your dog. She could be pregnant causing her swollen nipples and making her feel ill. It could be that she has mammary tumors also causing these symptoms. If she had puppies recently, she could have mastitis (an infection of the mammary glands). Finally, she could have a pyometra which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Because both mastitis and a pyometra are fatal without treatment, and since I can't see her in person to rule them out, I think it's best that she sees a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing these symptoms and the best way to treat her. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

I have never seen a bug bite cause inflammation of a mammary gland. Swelling is usually from mastitis - some type of infection and/or inflammation got into the teat. Please take her the vet for an exam. The vet needs to see her in person.
