Dog licking butt, scratching groin, rolling. Anal glands or worms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Catahoula Leopard Dog | Female | spayed | 65 lbs

So the past week or so, my dog has been having bursts of excessive butt licking, rolling on her back, and basically going crazy scratching in her groin area. It happens once or twice a day, usually around the time she eats. I know you will probably recommend changing food, but she has been eating the same food for 4 months now. Could be possibly have worms?

Callie is adorable! Thank you so much for posting pictures! Actually, the most common reason that we will see dogs try to lick or rub that area is not worms or a diet problem but an anal gland problem. I am attaching a handout on anal glands below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=625 I would recommend having your vet check her anal glands to see if that is the problem. Some dogs need them expressed regularly and some only need it every once in a while. But as you can see, it drives them crazy when they need it done. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
