My dog is limping due to a paw injury. Vet visit or home care options?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 53 lbs

I’m not sure what happened but I woke up and my dog was limping on 3 legs. I checked the paw he wouldn’t walk on and it looks like the skin is gone. I’ve been putting neosporin on and gauze with wrap to keep him from biting at it , should I take him to a vet or keep doing these steps at home?

Ouch, poor King! That looks very painful, and I would definitely take him into the vet to get it treated, Keep it wrapped until then to prevent him from biting at it, but have him seen by a vet first thing in the Monday. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My dog played fetch for an extended period of time yesterday and tore his paw pad. I keep bandaging it but every time I look away he’ll take it off and lick it excessively. He is limping as well and has a hard time walking outside to relieve himself.
It should heal on its own, but if he is painful, then a visit to the vet would be recommended. Your vet can dispense pain medication and may recommend an antibiotic. Place an e-collar on Kaner to prevent licking which can delay healing. If possible, carry him to his area that he uses for elimination then carry him back. If he will use a pee pad, you can place one just outside the door to minimize the walking distance.

Any topical antibiotics that you apply will likely just get licked off. I would just wait until you can have her evaluated by a veterinarian. Until the appointment, make sure she isn't licking it, as this can cause damage or ulceration to the skin and spread bacteria. Since she limps when she walks, this means she is painful, so trying to keep her as still as possible will help with pain. I would skip walks or play time until Monday

Poor King! If the paw is very swollen, it definitely sounds like something is wrong. I would recommend contacting the owner to let them know, and getting their permission to take King to the vet - he may need x-rays to help determine how severe his injury is, and the vet can also prescribe safe and effective pain medication to make him more comfortable. Until you are able to reach the owner, you can keep King as calm and quiet as possible to avoid any additional damage to his paw - this means short leash walks to potty only, no running or jumping.

I agree, it does sound like King's paw is really hurting him. I'd avoid touching it for now. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

My dog cut his paw pad open, it’s not bleeding but it’s red and raw. Is there any at home care I can do? I don’t think it requires stitches, he can still walk and run on it but he will limp here and there. What should I do?
Ouch, poor Oakley! Gently wash his paw with warm water and antiseptic soap. Bandage it and put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Change the bandage daily and keep an eye out for signs of infection. They include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. If you see any of those signs, take him into the vet for antibiotics. He's limping because he is in pain, so rest him for now. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on leash only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medication. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I think giving her 24-48 hours to see if she recovers is fine since she's not limping all the time. You can also soak the foot with the redness in an epsom salt bath for 5 minutes twice a day to help heal the skin. If she's still limping Monday/Tuesday, I would schedule a vet visit for an exam, possibly x-rays, and pain medications.

I recommend having him seen by a vet as soon as possible. They can perform a thorough exam, take x-rays, and stabilize the injured leg as needed as well as provide pain medication to keep King comfortable. I hope all is well!

You can clean it daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution and dry it thoroughly afterwards. Anything you apply will likely be lucked off unless you use an e-collar. It may have been abraded on rough surfaces inside or outside his enclosure. Since he is limping, he is likely painful and should be seen by your veterinarian. Pain medication can be administered or dispensed if indicated. If possible, the paw should be protected until it heals. This may require a bandage/bootie, coming indoors, an e-collar (cone) or a combination of the three. Your veterinarian can determine the best course of treatment after an exam.

My dog, Sadie, cut her paw pad on something two days ago and started limping. The limping seems to be getting worse. We've rinsed it out and used disinfectant. Do we need to take her to the vet or am I being too cautious?

If the limping seems to be worsening, I would rather have you take her to a veterinarian to be examined rather than wait any longer. If she has an infection deeper in the wound, you won't be able to reach it with topical disinfectants. She should probably be on an oral antibiotic and pain medication to help reduce any inflammation. I hope this helps! Poor Layla! If she is still limping I would make an appointment to have her seen by your vet. She may have injured her nail(s) as you described, or she may even have some soft tissue swelling/ irritation or a fracture. If there is a stick/ splinter/ other foreign object in her paw the vet can help remove it and treat it to help prevent infection. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Layla without consulting with your vet. I recommend keeping her in a crate or in a room where she can't run/ jump on anything and only taking her out for very short bathroom breaks until she is no longer limping. Make sure she's on a leash so she can't run and make things worse.
