My 9-week-old puppy has sudden diarrhea. Is it from the new mince?

Just got a new puppy two days ago and he has been having diarrhoea for a day and a bit. Food hasnt changed just a different brand of mince. 9 week old bandogge

I'm sorry Boss has diarrhea! The mince may be causing the diarrhea. He doesn't need mince, feeding him puppy food will provide all the nutrients he needs to grow correctly. In addition, the mince is extra calories, which can lead to excess weight gain. I would not give him the mince, and feed him only puppy food. Make sure as well that he is up to date on his deworming treatments, as intestinal worms occur commonly in puppies and also cause diarrhea. Have him seen by a vet on Monday or Tuesday if the diarrhea continues after removing the mince from his diet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Soft poops in dogs can be caused by intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. I would take take Tyson into the vet along with a fecal sample. The vet can confirm he does have worms and can give him a deworming treatment such as Drontal. I would take him into the vet either today or this weekend. As for the beef mince, it's not needed in his diet. Royal Canin is an excellent food, and it will provide all the nutrients he needs to grow and be healthy. Adding the mince is adding extra calories he doesn't need, it's also fatty and too fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis. I would avoid giving that to him. As an occasional treat, you can give him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones). Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor guy. It sounds like Minus has a pretty severe case of gastroenteritis, which is likely due to the unwanted food he ate. He is in desperate need of some antibiotics and probiotics prescribed by your vet. You can give him 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin tonight and start some over the counter Culturelle probiotics from your local pharmacy, as well as a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or lean ground turkey and rice; however, it is best to take him in to your vet for antibiotics as well to complete his treatment. It is very common for puppies to have diarrhea. This can happen with intestinal parasites, infectious diseases such as parvo virus, change in diet or even stress from the change in homes. It's possible that he also picked up and ate something off the grass that upset his system. If he's normal otherwise (no vomiting, good appetite, normal activity level) you could start by giving him plain boiled chicken breast and plain white rice in a 1 to 1 ratio. You can also add a small amount of pumpkin puree as the fiber can help firm up the stools. If the diarrhea continues or he becomes ill, starts vomiting, acting lethargic, or doesn't want to eat, I would strongly recommend taking him to a veterinarian right away. They will most likely want to do a fecal exam to check for parasites, a parvo test to check for this very serious illness and may even do blood work and x-rays to look for evidence of a stomach or intestinal blockage. It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you have not had Rambos stool checked for parasites I would bring a stool sample to your veterinarian to have it checked for intestinal parasites such as coccidia. This requires antiparasite medication to treat effectively. If the stool does not have evidence of parasites, this certainly could be the food. I typically recommend science diet, Purina one, royal canin or natural balance. If he is lethargic at all and not eating, I would have him examined by a veterinarian and checked for an infection such as parvo. I hope this helps! I would also recommend using a probiotics such as Purina fortiflora. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hello, our 8 1/2 week old pup has had some diarrhea this afternoon, can a rawhide bone he's been gnawing on be the cause? I just gave him one today that he loves and isn't eating it but just gnawing and sucking on it.
That could cause diarrhea depending on if it had any sort of flavoring/coating. With a puppy that young diarrhea could also be caused by G.I. parasites such as roundworms as well as any dietary changes which is common when they go to a new home. Alternatively diarrhea in puppies could be an early sign of parvovirus. If the diarrhea continues, becomes bloody, or Moose stops eating he should go to the veterinarian for exam.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! He may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. Since he has developed diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to prescribe an anti-diarrhea medication. He sounds like a happy chappy. His diarrhea could still be caused by the food change and if that is the cause indeed, it should resolve by itself. However, if he has not been wormed yet, he should get a puppy wormer now and then again in 3 weeks. Invictus is due for his first vaccinations, if he has not received them yet, so you can have him wormed at the vet when he receives his first or second round of shots, which ever applies. Do not abruptly change his food, try to stick with what he is eating now for as long as possible. When introducing new food, you need to do this slowly, ie replacing parts of the old food with the new over a few days until you arrive at 100% new food. If his diarrhea does not resolve within the next few days, and especially after worming, then he wil need to be seen by a veterinarian who will then do a fecal exam to check for other parasites not affected by a puppy wormer (giardia and coccidia being the most common ones).

My dog is 11 weeks old and has been having very loose poops/pooping frequently the past two days (today and yesterday) i’ve tried rice, making sure she drinks lots of water, im not sure what else to do.
If Minnie has not been wormed recently she may be suffering from intestinal parasites. I suggest you have her wormed when she is due for her vaccinations or get a puppy wormer and deworm her. If the diarrhea is bloody or if she is lethargic you need to take her to your veterinarian for an exam.

Hi there! Yes, quickly transitions to a new food can cause gastrointestinal upset which can present as diarrhea with mucous or even a bit of blood in the stool. Other causes may be intestinal parasites which are common in puppies. I would recommend adding plain canned pumpkin to his food to help firm up his stool and take a fecal sample to your veterinarian for testing soon.
