My cat attacks himself after flea treatment. Fleas or seizure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

My cat has been attacking himself violently and bites at his fur real hard and am so afraid he'll hurt himself. I thought he was having seizures at first because it all started after I put Sergeants Flea and tick topical on him a couple months ago, the next day he started having what looked like seizures but now I'm not sure. Anyway he stopped doing this for about a month, but a couple days ago, he started attacking himself again but only lasts about 10 seconds, could it be something else?

Poor Stormy! It could be that he has an infestation of fleas, and that's causing him to bite himself. Sergeants isn't a good flea brand, and I personally never recommend it. If he last got that flea treatment a couple of months ago, he is more than overdue for another one, and I can give you the flea treatment program I always recommend. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. A check up with the vet would also be a good idea. Try to video with your phone when he attacks himself so the vet can see it and rule in or out a seizure. I would bring him into the vet on Monday or Tuesday. Good luck, I hope this helps!
