My 2 year old hound mix has been itching quite frequently for the past couple months. He itches and sometimes whines while he is itching. His ears look dirty and that is what he itches the most. He also itches his eyes, mouth, armpits, and sometimes he bites his paws. Does he have mites? Mange? Allergies? Benedryl seems to make him stop itching. He doesn’t always itch, but he does it enough to where he causes red spots and scabs.

Poor Tucker! It sounds like he has some bad allergies and possibly an ear infections. Dogs with allergies commonly get yeast and bacterial infections in their ears. Allergies cannot be cured but they must be maintained to help prevent secondary infections. I would start giving him Benadryl twice a day every day. You could also bathe him in a shampoo to help with the itching. I like duoxo calming shampoo. I would also make sure he is on a high quality flea preventative like nexgard, bravecto, or comfortis. One flea bite can cause a crazy allergic reaction and make them super itchy. If this doesn’t help, I would talk to your vet about starting him on an anti-allergy medicine like apoquel. I have had really good success with this drug. I hope this helps!
