Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs
My 100% indoor cat is 2. Since we got her (rescue) at 8 mos, I’ve noticed her scratching her back right above her tail. It seems to drive her insane. Some times she will attempt to run away from “it.” My vet checked her and found no evidence of fleas/dry/irritated skin. The vet didn’t seem concerned at all. It seems to be getting worse. ive done research and think she may have twitchy cat syndrome. Should I find a vet familiar with this or is there really nothing that can be done about it?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I would make sure to fully rule out fleas by giving her a preventative flea treatment such as Advantage, even if no fleas are visible to the naked eye. I would also make sure that a skin scraping test and cytology have been done to fully rule out infection. If these causes are ruled out, then it may be related to hyperesthesia ("twitchy cat syndrome"). You can speak to your vet about a trial of pain medication that targets the nervous system. You could also try a feline pheromone spray called Feliway, which can help reduce her stress and anxiety related to the behaviour. I hope this helps, and that Mae is feeling better soon!
