Why is my cat coughing and swallowing? Asthma or heartworms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 6 lbs

Hi, my cat keeps coughing and swallowing, does not spit whatever it is out. She's a short haired tortie, likes to chew on plants (cat safe). I have told my vet about this but she said it was nothing and gave us hairball meds. But once we removed our boston fern plant she stopped her coughs but recently started again when a friend gifted it to us. The plant has been removed since, I'm trying hairball meds but she still coughs. I read about heart worms what do I do? She also just got her flu vax.

It definitely can be hairballs, it can be from whatever she is eating (plant wise or anything she isn't supposed to) but it could also be asthma. To diagnose asthma Pebbles would need X-rays. If Pebbles has asthma there is an injectable steroid. I would discuss this with your veterinarian. Heartworm disease in cats is extremely difficult to diagnose. I hope she feels better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
