My cat vomited clear fluid and ate. Is he okay? When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

I woke up this morning to a puddle of clear thick fluid on the floor. No hairball, but I may have just missed it while rushing around getting ready. I thought I may have also heard some vomit related sounds this morning (the chocking before vomit kind of noises) but I was mostly asleep. He seemed okay, and ate his food after the fact. Is he okay? Should I take him to the vet? What signs should I look out for?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vomiting can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, dietary indiscretion or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. Because it has only happened once, it is fair to wait and monitor for now as this might have been an isolated episode and perhaps Regal is not sick. However, if this continues and he starts vomiting more frequently or develops other signs such as diarrhea, inappetence and abdominal pain or discomfort, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. In the meantime, it would be a good idea to be able to monitor Regal closely for the rest of the day to see if other signs will develop. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping that this was nothing significant!
