My 9-year-old dog has chronic diarrhea, waking us nightly. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 7 months old | 58 lbs

My 9 year old dog has had chronic diarrhea for over a month. Took him to the vet twice, had blood work and urinalysis, no issues were found. It all started when he had problems with his anal glands. The vet took care of that, but I am not sure what to do with him getting us up every night 2-3 times to go out? I thought it might be a food issue and threw the rest of what I was feeding him away. then I bought the same food, along with some Senior food and he is eating and drinking fine.

I would encourage you to visit with your veterinarian again. Texas A and M offers a great diarrhea panel looking for infectious causes. If that is normal I would consider an abdominal ultrasound. Based on those results there may be a recommendation for intestinal biopsies. If not there are special prescription diets to try. Easily digestible, Hypoallergenic, and high fiber diets. Often it does take trials to see what helps. Best of luck, and I hope you find an answer soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
