My dog chews his crate blanket. Why does he do it and how to stop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Why does Kyro a half pit bull and half Labrador chew on a blanket I have in his crate? He has plenty of toys, a Kong , Nyla bone , Tire Toy and two ropes. A sincere thank you for all assistance received from Petco Pet Education Center.

Dog behavior can be a little mysterious sometimes, but chewing on a blanket can be dangerous, especially if small pieces are ingested. These can cause a foreign body obstruction, which can be life threatening. You can try getting Kyro a cushion, that may be less tempting to lift and chew, for his crate. He may also feel anxious being confined in the crate, if it is too small. You can try fencing off a part of your home for him with baby gates. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Kyro is precious! He may just prefer to chew things he may not be supposed to. You can definitely train him not to touch things that are not his toys. If you see him chewing a comforter/pillow/etc. you should discipline him by saying "no", making a loud noise, and replacing the item he is chewing with one of his toys. You can also try a Bitter Apple spray on these items (test a small piece to make sure it does not stain first). I hope this helps!
