My cat threw up blood and has dark watery poop. Emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 33 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

My fiance came home to find that my 12 y/o male cat had thrown up and also pooped 4 different times around our apartment today. The throw up had quite a bit of blood around it and the poop was a very dark brown color and watery. When I came home from work he came out of hiding and seemed fine. Cuddling with me and everything. He just ate his dinner and seems okay right now. Should I take him to an emergency vet or wait to see if it occurs again?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vomiting and diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal ulcer, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. The blood in the vomit and the dark stools are very concerning as that can be seen when there is significant gastrointestinal disease. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Logan evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid he is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check his hydration status and give him medications to make him feel better. Good luck!
