Why is my dog's nose bleeding inside one nostril with green discharge?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 1 ½ year old male dog started having blood in one nostril along with green discharge 3 weeks ago. The discharge/blood doesn’t come out of his nose, it’s just right inside his nose, on the inner part. It’s there daily but at times looks like it’s cleared up a little then comes back. Is this not considered a nosebleed because it’s not coming out? He was at the vet but the vet is not sure what it could be and is researching it. It’s cold here and my dog has bad food/env. allergies. Any ideas?

There are a few different possibilities with one-sided infections and bleeding. This could be due to a fungal infection like blastomycosis. It could be due to a foreign material stuck in the nose, or could be due to a tumor or cyst in the nose. In order to find out the cause, we usually need to have a good scope of the nose and/or imaging (radiographs and CT scan). I hope that helps and your veterinarian gives you some good options for discovering the cause of this sometime soon.
