My new white hamster looks like its eyes are missing. Is it blind?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male

I bought a white hamster yesterday at the store. I already have a dwarf hamster that I bought at that same store a year ago so I trusted it there. I noticed that the hamster's eyes were red. It seemed like he didn't have any eyes at all. Of course, seeing this little guy, I had to buy him. When I took him home, I took a closer look and it does seem like he has no eyes. How do I know for sure? I read about sticky eye and cleaned around both eyes and face, but it is still the same.

From the picture it certainly appears like he may be missing eyes. This is likely a birth defect. In captivity hamsters can survive fine this way. However, you may want to contact the pet store to let them know. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
