My cat ate a shoelace. Can I help him at home without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 10 lbs

My cat ate around 8in of shoelace. Don't have the money for a vet. He was a stray I took in. Any home remedy that could help him? He's acting fine. Thank you.

Oh no! I would try to feed him a high fiber canned food to try bulk up his stool to help him pass it. Try a light canned food or talk to your vet about prescribing him some prescription high fiber canned food if they have any. My biggest concern with a shoe lace is that it can get stuck and cause the intestines to act like an accordion and eventually rupture if not treated. Unfortunately, there is nothing else that can be done at home to help pass it. Keep a close eye on him. If he starts to vomit or stops eating, I would try to find a way to have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps and he is able to pass it on his own.
