My dog fights eye drops for conjunctivitis. How can I medicate him?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear you are having difficulty applying the ear medication - I understand this can be a challenging task! Ear infections themselves can be frustrating too. For my own dog, I find it helpful to stand over him with his head between my legs, that way I can gently use my legs to hold his body in place while one hand holds his head/ear and the other applies the ear medication. I then gently massage the base of the ear to allow the medication to contact all surfaces of the ear canal. It is certainly OK if Storm shakes his head immediately afterwards and a little medication comes out. Additionally, if you do not already have one at home, I STRONGLY recommend purchasing an Elizabethan collar (cone) for Storm, to prevent him from being able to itch his ears. Dogs can create a significant amount of trauma to their own ears and skin from scratching incessantly, and a cone will prevent him from getting to his ears while the infect

I am so sorry to hear that Kaimana is experiencing these problems with her eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Kaimana to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is injured, inflamed or infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Her to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. An rlceration is a tear in the top layer of the eye and is a serious condition. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue immediately. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Your vet will use a special tear stain drop to visualise the eye and the top layer to make are there are no ulcerations, and check for other conditions before prescribing medications. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointme

Poor Canelo! Ear infections can be very painful. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about one of the long lasting ear infection treatments that do not require you to medicate them at home. There are a few on the market now, but here is one of the them ( https://osurnia.com/ ). We certainly don't want to ruin your relationship with Canelo, so I would recommend having your vet do all treatments until this infection is resolved. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. If you are unable to get Toffy’s medication in the ears you may want to consider taking him to the vet. Once there they can help you clean out the ears and put the medication in them. They may also be able to give you some tips and tricks to get the medication in. Oftentimes with ear infections the ears are very inflamed and painful so this is probably contributing to the difficulty. Sometimes I will prescribe a steroid in addition to the ear drops to help ease the inflammation and pain. Your vet may also be able to offer a specific ear medication that they put in in the clinic that stays in place for 7-14 days so you do not have to treat at home. I hope this helps. Conjunctivitis in dogs almost always requires a topical antibiotic ointment to treat, so unfortunately you will need to get Gina seen. You can however ask your veterinarian to call in a prescription for a calming sedative such as Trzadone to make her visit less stressful for both her and you. This medication can be called in at any human pharmacy and works great for overly anxious pets like Gina.

At best, you can use a warm washcloth to keep the eye clear of discharge and place an e-collar on him to prevent pawing or rubbing. There are no OTC medications you can use and treatment would not be recommended without a diagnosis. If you can't get in to see your veterinarian, consider a visit to the local veterinary ER. It may cost more, but potential eye infections or injuries should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. My guess is that Oscar could have keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) which is basically "dry eye". This is not necessarily serious, per se, but needs to have long-term medication to manage/control it. It is easy to test for this - a simple tear test that your vet can do in the office in just a few minutes. Poor Alfie! You are right to try and keep him from scratching, as this can lead to painful scratches on the cornea. Use an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent him from scratching his eye. Please have Alfie seen by a vet if the conjunctivitis is recurring, and do not apply anything to the eye yourself, as adding anything else (even salt water, unless it is an ophthalmic saline solution appropriate for dogs) can irritate the eye further and lead to damage to the tissue. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Jasmine continues to have problems despite medications, I recommend taking her to the vet for further testing. She may have an underlying condition like dry eye or allergies that is causing the chronic problems. If so, she may need additional medications to treat the primary problem. Hi Jade! Loal is adorable and I'm sorry to hear that she's had so many eye issues lately. Conjunctivitis means that Loal has inflammation of the conjunctiva tissue within the eye, yet this inflammation can be the result of a number of underlying causes, including bacterial, parasitic, foreign material, viral, among others. Loal's eyes should be thoroughly examined with fluorescein staining prior to starting any medication, so I do not recommend attempting to treat her eyes on your own. Additionally, there are no safe or effective over the counter medications to manage conjunctivitis. I can understand that the cost can add up quickly, but this is the safest and most effective way to help Loal. I hope that all goes well!
