My dog fights eye drops for conjunctivitis. How can I medicate him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years old

My dog has been to the vet and been prescribed with ointment for conjunctivitis. He had to be muzzled and made it very hard to be checked which isn’t unusual for him. He also fights against me at home when trying to put the ointment in and has become less cuddly towards me. Im at a loss, I know long term training can be done to help his behaviour but what can be done short term to help me to help him to get his eyes better? Thank you

Poor Oscar! It can definitely be challenging and strain your bond with Oscar when you have to medicate him. You can try to supply some treats while he is being treated or his favorite toy as soon as you are done. For your safety at home, you can try to use an E-collar or “cone” or invest in a muzzle. In the future, you can try training Oscar to let you touch his eyes, ears, and mouth the way you would train him to sit and stay with positive reinforcement. I hope this helps!
