Why is my puppy scratching, licking, and has red skin patches?

Hi there, we have a 3.5 month old English bulldog puppy and have noticed he has been licking and scratching on his legs and neck. There are red patches in those areas and also around his eyes. Do you have any suggestions on what this may be?

There are a couple of things that could be causing Ray to scratch and itch so much. It could be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, he will need a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Ray is feeling unwell. It sounds like he may have underlying allergies (usually due to food or the environment, or a combination of both). The recent problem with his eye may be an eye infection, a corneal ulcer (scratch on the eye), or a cherry eye (prolapsed third eyelid gland). These things can be exacerbated by allergies, which cause the dog to scratch and further worsen any inflammation in the eye. I would start by putting an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent any further damage to his eye. If he lets you, you can try putting a warm wet compress over the eye to help provide relief and reduce swelling. Tomorrow, your vet may perform a fluorescein stain test to check for a scratch on the eye, and will likely prescribe eye drops for any infection and inflammation. This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). I recommend you get her assessed for demodex mites, yeast overgrowth or a bacterial infection as soon as possible as the earlier this is treated, the easier it will be to resolve. It looks like your dog has a skin infection, most likely caused by allergies or fleas. The allergies can be from a protein in his food or to something in the environment, like grasses, pollens, etc. I would recommend taking Oakley in to see the vet so he can be started on some antibiotics to help clear up his skin. I would also recommend discussing with your vet some options for medication to help control his allergies and itch like Atopica, Apoquel, or Cytopoint.
