Why is my pit bull drooling, losing weight, and can't open her mouth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 5 months old | 50 lbs

My pit bull is ten and all of a sudden lost 15 pounds and be thought it was canine flu and took all the antibiotics. She's not gotten better. She's drooling, having difficulty opening her mouth, but still is wanting to go on long walks. We push fluids and give her wet dog food. We're taking her to the vet again, but if you have any inkling to what is happening it'd be appreciated. My daughter is 16 and is becoming depressed over this, taking care of her watching her struggle.

I'm sorry that Speckle isn't feeling well! The drooling and difficulty opening the mouth can be caused by dental issues, masses, or nerve/muscle damage. Your vet can take a good look inside of Speckle's mouth to determine what is going on and recommend the appropriate treatment. Speckle may need x-rays and bloodwork to rule out the conditions above. I hope all is well with Speckle! I know the illness of a pet can be stressful, but it sounds like you are taking great care of your girl!
