My dog is sad after moving. How can I help him adjust to our new home?

Just mooved house and cant help feeling guilty that my dog is sad and and home sick .any special tips or things I need to do in case he trys to run away back home please

I'm sorry Jake isn't happy in his new home! He will adjust, but it does take time. I would not leave him outside by himself in case he does try to escape. Go outside with him and play with him, thus making time together in the new home fun. While indoors, show him lots of love and cuddles, train him to do trick such as sit and lie down, and give him treats during the training process. This will keep him busy and happy. Moving can certainly be stressful for our four legged friends, just as they can be for us! You're doing the right thing by first confining Benji to a smaller area with his bed, food, toys and treats. If he is a food motivated dog, you can try keeping him busy by filling a Kong toy with a bit of canned dog food or moistened kibble, then putting it in the freezer overnight. Sometimes I top this frozen Kong concoction with a bit of peanut butter, but be sure that it does not contain xylitol (this is toxic to dogs). One other thing that you could try would be a calming pheromone diffuser or collar (Adaptil is one brand). For some dogs, this can be hugely beneficial, but other dogs seem less effected. If Benji's anxiety still seems to escalate, you may need to take him to the vet to discuss a short course of anxiety medication (such as alprazolam) to help him to adjust to his new home. Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Honey is having some trouble adjusting to her new home. Hopefully you brought with you a few familiar items with you from Honey's previous home, like a blanket or bed. Make sure she has access to that. Offer her plenty of cuddles and attention. Offer her usual food and treats from your hand, to help gain her trust. If Honey is used to a crate, make sure you use a similar one in your home. Place her bed in there and she should quickly be drawn to it as a place of comfort and safety. I'd also look into a product called Adaptil, which is a canine pheromone that can help reduce stress and anxiety in new environments. Give it time. It is a difficult phase for Honey right now, but she should gradually get used to her new home and learn to love her new family, if you are patient, consistent, and offer her a nurturing loving home! Poor Jasper! It sounds like he's quite stressed and anxious at the moment. Without more information, it's hard to say if this is simply due to all of the changes he's experienced recently (new home, new owner, etc.) or if he has some generalized anxiety issues. I would recommend giving him some time to settle in - this behavior may resolve over the next several days once he has a chance to adjust to his new living situation. You can help by giving him some tasty things to chew on (large rawhide chews, bully sticks, etc.) as chewing is a relaxing activity for dogs - just make sure to give him his own space while he chews, and don't allow your other dog to bother him. You may also want to try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure. If there is no improvement in his anxiety within the next week or so, it would be best to consult with a veterinary behaviorist who can evaluate him in person and help you put together a detailed plan t

Moves are stressful for everyone. Some things you can do to help Jimmy transition are to keep him busy and try to create and stick to a schedule. The schedule helps because it creates routines and Jimmy will know what is going to happen during the day, even in new surroundings. If you don't already have one, I would establish one before you move and try to stick to it during the transition. Giving Jimmy as much exercise as you can manage will be helpful, Getting out for even short walks frequently would be good, but also getting him out for a good walk or dog park for a run would be ideal. Utilize walks as much as you can to burn off energy. Walking generally isn't enough for strong breeds. Adding obedience, getting him to jump up on things (like benches and walls) will help drain his energy more. In situations such as these, time is your friend, as well as patience. 4 years living solely outside is a long time for a dog, and that's a lot of years of work to reverse. You may want to treat Perseus as if he were a puppy, starting with a similar routine for feeding, potty training, etc to get him used to being around people and in/out of a house. Getting him used to you can take time. Always approach by talking calmly and gently and tossing a treat toward him. Not directly facing him and/or crouching down can also make you less intimidating and scary. Let him approach you first rather than you approach him, and be sure to quietly praise or offer treats any time he does. As he gets more used to you, you can then treat only when he allows petting or approaches you and accepts gentle handling. This can take a lot of time, so patience and always maintain a calm presence can help. It is also a good idea to speak with a trainer or behaviorist in your area who can come to the home and o

We just came back from vacation (a month long one) and Lucas was staying with a family friend and his dog. Now that he's back home he seems excited to be back with us, but at the same time he looks sad. I think he misses the other dog he played with.
I am sorry to hear that it seems Lucas is not himself. It is most likely that he is only experiencing an adjustment period following your separation and now return. I would advise the following to try and help him feel more secure and therefore help him return to being himself; Extra walks or exercise Soiclaiziation with other dogs at a dog park Special dinner such as cooked carrots and boiled chicken breast added to his normal food Interactive game time like hide and seek or fetch Extra cuddles and affection Positive reinforcement when he seeks out interaction with you If Lucas is still not acting himself in a a weeks time, vomits or has diarrhoea, loses his appetite, seems I. Pain or depressed I would consider a trip to the veterinarian to make sure there aren't any underlying causes to his behaviour change. Wishing you both the best of luck.

My 3 year old boxer hound mix has become very sluggish. We recently moved and I think the stress may be effecting her. Is there a way to put her more at ease or recommendations to get back her puppy pep?
It's true that some pets can become very sad in a new home, but they should bounce back as soon as you get back to the old routine of things! Try to keep an area clear of boxes that is just for them. You can leave a favorite pet bed or blanket in this area and provide toys and treats. A supplement like Zylkene can help with stress, or a product like Comfort Zone Adaptil Collar or Diffuser can make them feel calm. However, if this sluggishness goes on for several more days, it may be wise to have Shelby checked over by a vet to make sure nothing else is going wrong. I would hate for us to assume she was just sad about the move instead of realizing that she was actually sick and it was a bad coincidence that it happened at the same time as the move!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. It looks like Loki is a mixed breed dog but resembles a coonhound. Dogs can exhibit anxiety and be nervous in new situations, so him whining and being unsure of a new place is not unusual. It can take a while, weeks to months, for him to become very comfortable at your place, but I wouldn't give up! Depending on whatever their previous life situation was, they can take time to adjust to a new home and new people. I recommend being as kind and gentle to him as you can, and be patient with him as he adjusts to your home. If he hasn't seen a veterinarian in the last year, I recommend having him seen for an exam to ensure he is otherwise healthy. I hope this is helpful!

It would be helpful to know exactly what she is doing that is causing you to be concerned though. I am so sorry for all that you guys are going through! Such stress is hard on everyone, regardless of 2 legs or 4. However, the difference is, you KNOW why you're stressed and why you're moving and why everything is in upheaval, and all Matel knows is that every thing changed and her people seem upset. The most important thing is to make sure that her needs continue to be reliably met-- food offered at the same time, water always available, maybe a routine daily walk stays intact. Additionally, make time to do things she likes to do... play with her and her toys, try to get her playing, etc. This is good stress relief for everyone; if she sees you and your wife having fun and trying to engage her, that will reassure her that, "oh, its going to be ok. They are ok!" As things settle down, she will likely come around to her old self.
