Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 79 lbs

Riley consumes 1 pack (4 sticks of butter on Wednesday). Having diarrhea since Thursday, watery at times but never dark, at least 5x/day. Not lethargic, has good appetite and energy. Has been eating white rice and chicken, drinking 1 bottle of pedialyte a dAy. Received 3 doses of KaoPectate (1 yesterday, 2 today) but still with diarrhea. No other symptoms.

It sounds like that much butter has really upset Riley's stomach. You are doing all the home remedies that I would have suggested to help settle his stomach in hope that the diarrhea would clear up, but it sounds like it hasn't been working if he still has diarrhea. At this point in time, a vet visit is recommended. When the home remedies are not working to treat the diarrhea, this is an indication that medication is needed to help treat it. Medication for diarrhea can only be prescribed by the vet, so I would take Riley into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can examine him and treat his diarrhea. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I would fast 1 meal, and then continue the boiled chicken and rice but at a very small amount for several feedings the next day or two. His GI tract really needs to rest. I think continuing the kaopectate is appropriate, and the pedialyte is probably fine too. I would expect things to slow down soon, but still make take another few days to firm up. If you see any blood or if he vomits then he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
