My dog eats poop & everything on walks. Is he okay? What can I do?

So I was taking Hachi on a walk today and on the back he unfortunately ate a poop from another dog.The poop wasn’t picked up and Hachi always eat his poop so he ate the other dog’s poop.Hachi also almost eat everything on the floor when I take him on a walk.Will Hachi be okay and what can I do about the walking problem.Thanks!

I would make sure Hachi is up to date on his deworming treatments, giving him one if he is not. He could get worms from eating another dog's poop, which is why giving him a deworming treatment is important. Other than that, he should be fine. When you walk him and you see poop on the sidewalk, steer him away from it or distract him by making him do a trick like sit and then rewarding him with a treat. I would also pick up his poop right after he goes to keep him from eating it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I would make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments. Intestinal worms can cause a dog to eat feces. Also deworm all of your dogs if they are all not up to date on that treatment. You may need to keep her on a short leash while outside to potty to keep her from eating the other dogs' feces and keep her from eating the dirt. Take her out to potty on the leash, let her do her business, then take her back inside right away so she doesn't get a chance to eat anything she shouldn't. Good luck, I hope this helps!

This can be a common problem. Make sure he is up to date on his deworming treatments, as intestinal worms can lead to poop eating. Also make sure he is eating a high quality puppy food. Nutritional deficiencies can be a cause of poop eating. To keep him from doing it, pick up the poop right after he goes so he has no access to it. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

It's a gross habit, but many dogs do this and are fine. There could be a couple of reasons why Parce ate his poop. One is a nutritional deficiency in his diet. Make sure you are feeding him a high quality puppy formulated food. Another cause is intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. I would make sure he is up to date on his deworming treatments, giving him one if he is not. Finally, it could be he simply likes the taste. In my yard there’s cat poop from my neighbor’s cat. I always try to take my dog away from that, but sometimes as soon as I open the front door he runs and ate it this happened 4 times. Is he going to be ok ?
I'm sorry to hear Chiquitin is eating poop. Certainly eating anything other than their regular dog food has the potential to upset a dog's stomach and could cause vomiting or diarrhea. Most of the time, however, the biggest concern we have when a dog eats feces is the transmission of intestinal parasites. I suspect Chiquitin will be fine, but I would recommend monitoring him for an upset stomach. If he does develop vomiting or diarrhea, I would take him to your vet to be evaluated. If he is otherwise acting normally, I would recommend taking a fecal sample in to your vet in the next few days to have it evaluated for intestinal parasites. If Chiquitin contracted a parasite, he can be started on the appropriate de-worming medication.

I have a 9 year old miniature schnauzer who just recently started eating other dogs feces while I take him for walks. He has never done this before. Can you please advise why this could be happening and what can I do about it?
Eating feces is a very gross habit that is unfortunately common in dogs. Since this is a recent behavior change for Mahtzee, it's possible that it could be related to an underlying medical problem of some kind - some illnesses such as diabetes and Cushing's disease can cause an increased appetite, which can lead to eating all sorts of unappetizing things that he may not have been interested in before. Your vet can do some simple blood tests to check for these problems, so it might be a good idea to have this done if he hasn't had any lab work recently. If everything checks out normal, then it may be that Mahtzee has simply developed a taste for poop - this sometimes happens, sadly! In that case, I would recommend teaching him a "leave it" command to prevent him from eating feces on your walks. To teach this, carry some tasty treats with your in your pocket when you take him for a walk. If he shows interest in something on the ground that you don't want him to pick up, say "leave

Jack is so cute! Unfortunately, this is a common problem with dogs, and some of them do it simply because they like the taste. It can also be a sign of intestinal worms or a nutritional deficiency, so make sure he is up to date on his deworming treatments and you are feeding him a high quality food. It would also help if daycare picked up his feces and the other dogs's feces right after they go, which would prevent him from having access. I hope this helps!

It really sounds like you have pretty much done everything we recommend in these situations. Often times dogs will "outgrow' this behavior but there is no guarantee. There is an old wives tale that says dogs do this due to a nutritonal deficiency. That has never been proven so I don't necessarily believe it but you can try giving Chaplin a multivitamin (like Pet Tabs) to see if that helps. The behavior can be due to boredom, curiosity, hunger or a nutritional deficiency. This behavior is frequently seen in puppies but they typically outgrow it by one year of age. Have Nemmy examined by your veterinarian. Review her diet (type and amount) to confirm proper nutrition. Keep her on a short leash while out on walks. You can use a head harness such as a Halti or Gentle Leader to have more control over her when on a leash.

Keeping Rocky away from anything poop-like is the best to keep him from eating it. That may mean keeping him on a leash when outside going potty in the yard, or keeping him in a laundry room or kitchen that is easy to clean so you can get to it quickly before he eats it. Anything remotely edible that isn't food, treat, or a chew toy should be moved out of reach. Crate training, which is useful for potty training can also help deter accidents in the house and chances for him to eat poop. For-bid and other products can also be given to all your pets to make the stool less tasty to him. If he's having diarrhea in addition to trying to eat everything, ruling out any issues such as parasites or GI problems with your vet is a good idea.

It's difficult to say if this is raccoon feces for sure from the picture, but if it is, raccoons can carry a form of roundworm, and it can be harmful to dogs and humans. Even if it is not raccoon feces, other types of wildlife can also carry parasites that can be harmful to dogs and humans. I recommend calling your vet to get dewormer for Hachi right away. Your vet may also recommend an appointment to have Hachi examined and running a fecal test on him to check and see if he has any parasites. If this is not an option I recommend seeing if you can get an over the counter dewormer that is labeled for dogs and giving it as per the label directions. If you notice diarrhea or vomiting, or worms in Hachi's stool, I recommend seeing a vet right away, as these could be signs that Hachi has intestinal parasites. Wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning up Hachi's stool to reduce the risk of infection.
