My dog is sick after eating human food. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | unspayed | 18 lbs

My beagle has been acting strange all day. She wasn't eating, lethargic and had a few loose stools. I just boiled her some chicken and she ate almost all of it. She has been mostly sleeping all day and Jsut not herself. I'm not sure if just to wait or if I need to take her to the vet. I did feed her las night some pork and black beans. She doesn't ordinarily eat house food and I'm wondering if it's just that. Any suggestions?

I would continue with the bland diet - use boiled chicken and add some rice to it. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day instead of 1-2 larger ones. If she is not much better by Monday then you should take her to your vet. If she starts vomiting at any time or doesn't want to eat at all then you need to take her to your vet as soon as possible. It could be from the pork and black beans, I don't know the answer to that question. In the future though, it is really recommended that you don't feed any human foods (with the exception of the bland diet when needed). Our foods are often too rich/high in fat and can cause a serious, life-threatening pancreatitis. It is better to stick with dog food. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
