Why is my kitten breathing fast at rest after URI treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Dear vet, Stray Kitten was rescued at 8 weeks old. Got vaccinated at 10 weeks and developed URI after 5 days. Doxycyline and metacam successfully removed pussy eye and nose discharge and fever. What stays, after 10 days of the above treatment is a high respiration rate 80/minute in rest. The vet hears no abnormal heart or lung sounds. The kitten eats well and grows 100 grammes a week. Could this still be the symptom of a virus or is there a heart or lung issue that is just not audible?

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. I am concerned as you are about that high respiratory rate. I would also be concerned about other lung problems and would recommend an x-ray. Kittens can develop an infection called FIP that causes fluid to build up in the chest and/or belly. I would want to make sure this isn’t what is happening. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
