Can my cat catch a serious infection like FELV or FIV at the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years old

Hi, my question probably could be a bit weird, but whenever I visit a vet with my cat I'm concerned that she might acquire a serious infection, lile FELV or FIV. Although she doesn't contact with other cats there, is it possible that she might get infected while being examined by the vet (for example, by passing some virus-containing saliva if the vet examined an infected cat before my cat)?

No. They have done studies on cats that live together and share water bowls and food bowls. The studies show after 10 plus years a few did turn positive but the risk is minimal unless actively fighting one another. As far as Felv, there is more of a risk but it does not live very long in the environment and each room and supplies are disinfected for such viral disease in between each patient. Felv is protective in the vaccine you routinely get to also minimalist the risk
