My cat keeps spilling his water bowl. Is it due to whisker fatigue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 3 lbs

My cat knocks over his water bowl every time I put water in it. Could it be because his whiskers touch the sides? It doesn’t seem to bother my Siamese cat that is also a male, and his same age.

That certainly is a possibility. Some cats seem to have very sensitive whiskers. Some people have called it whisker stress or whisker fatigue. We have no idea why it appears to affect some cats and not others (even if they are related). The only treatment is to use wider bowls for food and water, so their whiskers do not touch the sides of the bowls. Another option that some cats prefer is an automatic water fountain. I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
