My puppy's poop is dark and smelly after food change. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 10 days old | 37 lbs

I changed my dogs feed at 4 months, no big difference in the two or the quality of them, just because I moved to a country where 1st one isn't sold. My dog is 5months now and stool is dark and extremely smelly (not tarry). Not diarrhoea, just blackish and has a really bad smell. Otherwise puppy is fine, no sign of pain or discomfort. Playful and energetic.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would recommend switching the food to something like Science Diet or Royal Canin and add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora which can be found online quite easily. If this does not help or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Finn so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
