Is 70-degree pool water safe for my dog, especially older ones?

If your dog is healthy and fit you can take him for a swim even in colder days. If Spot is suffering from arthritis he may get a flare-up of painful joint(s), so it would be better to avoid getting wet. Finally, if he is Labrador or Golden Retriever he may get a condition called 'swimmers tail' which is a very painful condition of the tail. In general, I would recommdend to dry-towel Spot if you do take him for a swim in cold days.

That is hot! Chlorinated pool water can cause an over drying of the skin. A baby pool full of tap water that is safe to drink is less likely to cause dry skin and is fine for the dogs to get in. Hello. You just need to use your own senses. If the water looks very cloudy & there is obvious scum on the water & collecting on the shore, stay away. That's a very good question. Honestly, I might ask your vet why they recommended that. I can't think of any reason that a puppy can't swim except for safety reasons. I used a lifevest for my puppy when he was young to be safe and NEVER allowed him unsupervised or with any other dogs. But I think it's a great idea for puppies to be exposed to swimming and is a great way for them to burn off some extra energy. Congrats on your new baby! I hope that was helpful! Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Swimming is great exercise for hips and knees. If Am is holding his 1 back leg in the air, it could be due to the hips, however it also could be a sore knee. I would suggest getting the knee checked for a ruptured TPLO, although he is young for this to occur. Swimming either way will strengthen the muscles and take less pressure off the joints. Dogs often will walk if the water isn't deep enough that they have to swim, so you can try brining him somewhere where the water is deeper. Walking in the water is also very good exercise for his knees and hips as well, as the resistance of the water provides great exercise without decreased stress on the joints. They may be having a reaction to chemicals in the pool, or the pool water could be drying out their skin. You can try rinsing them off with clean water after they get out of the pool and bathing with gentle dog shampoo 2-3 times per week. I like Dechra DermaLyte Shampoo (it smells great, too!). If the skin appears dry, you can start giving fish oil to improve the quality of the skin. You can just squirt a human fish oil capsule over their food twice a day (but it can give some dogs fishy breath and greasy stools). Other causes for itching could be fleas, ticks, allergies (food, fleas, environment), mites, or bacterial skin infection. I recommend that they both be on a good flea and tick preventative. Since they spends so much time in the water, I would recommend a prescription oral preventative from your vet. Don't forget to clean their ears! In addition, the pool water likely has chlorine in it, and while it won't be high levels, it's not the best for him to drink. The chlorine in the pool could dry out his skin as well if he went in again. I would try to keep him away from the pool if possible.

You can start now by letting her walk into the water and play in the water. eventually as she gets older and grows up she will be more daring in the water and will voluntarily go for a swim if asked. Do not overdo it, 8 weeks is like a 1 year old human toddler. Play it by ear and only let her play in the water as much as she actually wants. Bring a towel and make sure to dry her well after coming out so she will not get cold and connects the water with something nice as rubbing and drying her body.

Addison's won't have a major effect on her ability to survive cold temperatures, but in terms of what is "too cold," it depends on what she's used to, and on what type of shelter she has.
