My dog tries to bite other dogs on walks. How do I stop this behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 11 lbs

We adopted an 8 year old toy Maltipoo 1 year ago. She is very loving to adults and kids but hates dogs to a point she would try to bite them if I don't keep her away from dogs. Groomer says it is me, she doesn't want dogs near me. She sees other dogs in the neighborhood on the dog walk repeatedly but still tries to go after them. Any ideas how I can calm this behavior? Thank you, Pat

It sounds like Suzy is dog aggressive, and I would speak to your vet about a referral to a professional behavior expert. I never recommend owners try to train aggressive behaviors on their own because it can be dangerous and the owner can get hurt. This is something that is best left to the professionals. It is definitely something that needs to be worked on immediately with a trainer, as she could hurt another dog or get very hurt herself if she goes after a big dog. Give your vet a call today or first thing in the morning to discuss professional behavioral experts in your area. Good luck, I hope this helps!

This is a very bad habit indeed! This is something that needs to be stopped immediately, as it could get Nalah and you into big trouble. First off, I would get her a muzzle to wear when walking her. Do not take it off, and this should prevent her from biting people. Do not allow her in your yard unobserved so there is no risk of her getting out and biting someone. Next, I would consider spaying her. Intact dogs can be aggressive due to wanting to protecting their territory, and spaying her may help reduce some aggression. Finally, I would make an appointment with professional behavioral expert. I never recommend owners work with aggressive dogs on their own because of the danger and risks involved. Aggressive behavior is something best left to the experts. I would speak to your vet about a referral to a professional behavioral expert. Good luck, I hope this helps!
