My mouse has red eye discharge. Is it porphyrin staining or stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 8 days old

I got this mouse on December 21st. Shortly after I noticed she had red mucus surrounding the eye and though she cleaned it up for the most part, I used the warranty Petsmart has and had them check it out. She stayed there from Jan 1st to Jan 8th. They said she was fine and that it had just been watery, not red. Two days ago I introduced her to my other female mouse and when I checked on her the next day I saw this! She is energetic and eating well. Should I worry or is this just stress? Help!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From the photo, it appears that Penelope has some porphyrin staining. This is a pretty normal substance made by a small gland behind the eye. Most mice typically groom this off so most owners don’t see it. If you are seeing the staining, it means that Penelope isn’t grooming as much as she should be. Decreased grooming activity can be a sign of stress, particularly if in a new environment with a new cagemate. I recommend keeping a close eye on Penelope to make sure she is not hunched and that her fur is nice and flat.
