My dog's nail is bent and bleeding. Can I cut it myself at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old

My pit bull Maxi was outside, as soon as she walked into the house we saw blood on the floor. I checked her paw and noticed her nail is bent :( she’s not crying & she walks fine. From time to time she does left her paw & she’s been licking it the last hr or so.... can I cut it off myself ? Any advice please thank you!

You could try and cut the broken piece but this can be very uncomfortable, if she is not currently lame i would monitor to see if it will fall itself. Watch for heat, pain or swelling which may indicate infection
