My dog vomited orange-brown gooey liquid with granules. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 58 lbs

My dog just vomited an orangish brown gooey liquid. He dry heaved for a few seconds before anything came out and it wasn't a large amount of vomit, but along with being quite gooey, it had small granules in it, what could this mean? I haven't changed his food in nearly a year, he's using the bathroom regularly and his appetite hasn't changed at all.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bear may have eaten something he wasn’t supposed to such as garbage, human food, or pieces of a toy. You should keep a close eye on him to ensure he doesn’t vomit again. If Bear continues to vomit, develops diarrhea or is not acting quite like himself, he should be seen by his vet as he may require medication and supportive care. In the meantime, I would hold off on giving Bear any food for about 12 hours and then reintroduce his normal diet slowly (about 1/2 his normal serving) I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!
