Great question! Grains are fine for Buffy, you do not need to feed her a grain free diet. There is absolutely so scientific evidence that grain free diets have any benefits to dogs, and it's a fad in my opinion. In addition, it's actually extremely rare for a dog to have a grain allergy. Only 10% of all allergies in dogs are due to food, and the majority of them are protein allergies. Go ahead and feed Buffy a diet with grains in it, it will provide a source of fiber and energy for her. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Great question. There is no scientific evidence that grain free diets are any better than diets with grain in it. You do not have to measure the amount of grain as there is no downside in feeding diets with grain. With grain. Grain free food is a fad, and a dangerous one at that. Vets are seeing an increase in dogs developing cardiomyopathy who are fed grain free diets, and the FDA is now investigating that link. There is no scientific proof grains are bad for dogs, and grain allergies are very rare in dogs. Only 10% of dogs who have allergies have food allergies, and the majority of those allergies are protein related like chicken. You would need to have Lily seen by your vet to put her on a specialized diet to determine if she has a food allergy or not.

This is a great question! There is currently no evidence that wheat or other grains in pet food and treats is 'bad' unless a pet has an allergy to wheat. Grains provide important nutrients, and even strict carnivores like wild cats probably ingest some grain contained in the stomachs of their prey. All pet foods need some way to provide carbohydrates, and the potato or pea in grain free foods is just an alternative source of carbohydrate. In summary, the 'grain free' pet food trend is mostly about marketing, and probably reflects the popularity of grain free and gluten free diets for people.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Ivar. In my opinion, I never recommend grain free food, even before the questions about it's safety came up. Grain free is a fad, grains are good for dogs, and it's very rare for a dog to have an allergy to grains. The most common allergies are environmental, and only about 10% of dogs with allergies have food allergies. Of those dogs, the majority is protein allergies. I personally have not found a vet in my community (both in person and online) that recommend a grain free diet unless there is a proven allergy. You can add rice to a grain free diet, but please know as well that evidence is emerging that it may not only be the lack of grains in these foods causing the heart problems. It's believed that the exotic meats, fruits, and veggies in these boutique foods contribute to it, and I will put a link below to an article about it. Great question! In my opinion, grain free diets are a current fad. There is actually no scientific evidence that grain free diets are beneficial to dogs at all. Grains are fine for dogs, they provide a source of fiber which helps fill them up and keeps them satisfied. It sounds like Koda is letting you know he likes grains if he's picking the Royal Canin over Blue. Also in my opinion, Blue is a terrible food and you will find many, many veterinarians agree with that opinion. It is not a well regarded food in the veterinary community. Many vets have seen terrible cases of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in dogs in Blue, as well as a lot of gas. In addition, they have been caught a number of times lying about what goes into their product, false advertising, and no quality control over how their food is made (they don't own their own factories, they send the recipe out to be made). Grains aren't bad; it is a personal choice whether to feed your dog grain-free food. The amount of grains in a diet will depend on the other nutrients in the food. They are often used to make a dog food balanced in the total nutrients. There is some concern right now that some grain-free diets (particularly those that use potatoes or legumes) may be related to heart disease in some breeds of dogs. We don't know enough information to say there is a direct correlation. However, for that reason, I tend to guide my clients away from grain-free foods. When deciding if a brand or type of dog food is good or not, I look at the pet. If they are eating it well without vomiting, diarrhea, or flatulence, and they have plenty of energy and a nice, glossy coat, then it is probably a good food for them. Nope, no reason to switch at all! Purina is the best of the supermarket brands, and it's absolutely fine to feed Cletus. I never recommend feeding grain free diets. They are a fad, and it's appearing to be a dangerous fad. Vets are seeing an increase in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy who are on grain free diets, and the FDA is now investigating that link. Great questions! I will answer your second question first. No, the food should not be grain free. Grain free food is a fad, and quite a dangerous one. Vets are seeing an increased in dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs fed grain free diets, and the FDA is investigating that link. There is no proof grains are bad for dogs, and a grain allergy is very rare. So to answer your first question, brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my own dogs Iams and they love it. I hope this helps!

Puppies do need higher amounts of protein to help them grow correctly, and the current researched recommendation is no more than 28%. If Mushu is doing well on his food, there is no reason to switch him. Do not worry about switching to a grain free food, there is absolutely no research or proof that grain free food is beneficial to dogs. It's actually a fad. In dogs who have allergies, only 10% of these dogs have food allergies and the majority of them are protein related. Grain allergies in dogs are truly very rare, and I never recommend feeding a grain free food unless the dog has a diagnosed allergy. In addition, grains are beneficial to dogs, they provide a source of fiber and sustained energy. Finally, recent research has come out that grain free diets with lentils in it has negatively affected the absorption of taurine in dogs.
