What do white specks in my cat's hairball mean? Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

My healthy 6 yr old male cat Mumford threw up a hairball. He has before but for the first time it has white specks in it. Like sesame seeds. Dark fur makes it very easy to see. Anything to be concerned about?

This could just be digested materials mixed in with the hair. I wouldn't be too concerned. I would however get him started on hairball medicine regimen a few times per week. I like laxatone. You can give it 2-3 times per week long term. If the vomiting continues or if you ever see blood, I would have your vet take a look at him. I hope this helps!
