Why is my cat limping on and off, crying in pain with a lifted leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 12 lbs

My cat autumn is a little overweight, she’s able to move around and she’s very active with my other cats, just recently she was walking and starting crying and whimpering and was limping and her back left leg was lifted up, I put her in my room so the other cats wouldn’t hurt her and after 10 min she was up and playing and walking again. This has been off and on the past couple of days, she seems good one second and in pain the next

While the possibilities are somewhat broad, the most likely thing is that Autumn probably pulled or sprained something that is causing some on-and-off again discomfort. With you have multiple cats that are somewhat active with one another, the chance that she could have injured herself while playing is relatively high. I think keeping her separated from the other cats is probably in her best interest until things resolve on their own. Don't try and give Autumn any over the counter pain medication as none of them are safe for cats. If the pain doesn't seem to resolve on its own in the next day or two, get her into the vet for an orthopedic examination, and possibly a prescription for some anti inflammatory medication to soothe the discomfort she's in. Hope this makes sense.
