My cat's eye is swollen and has pus. Is it serious or will it heal?

His eye does look swollen! He could have injured his eye or he could have an eye infection. The eye is such an important and delicate structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take him into a vet immediately to diagnose what is causing his eye to be swollen so it can be treated.

The pus could be coming from around the eye, but if the cornea has been scratched, he could wind up blind, or even losing the eye if the injury is not addressed quickly. The pictures are quite dark, so it's not possible to actually see the eye, but this type of case is usually due to a scratch to the outside of the eye, or a foreign body stuck under the eyelid. Scratches to the outside of the eye are not usually easy to see and we often need to apply a special stain to the eye in order to detect it. For now, it's best if you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth. It's also possible that there is an infection in the eye, or conjunctiva that is causing this. Oh my. This appears to possibly be an injury to the eye and subsequent infection. It is hard to tell the degree of injury based on the photos, a vet exam is definitely needed her. I would highly recommend taking Mow to your local vet right away to get this eye tested, fully examined and treated. Best case scenario is that there isn't permanent damage done to this eye and antibiotics/pain medication /- drainage of a potential abscess are needed to get Mow better. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Puma. His eyes do look very red and irritated. He will need to see his veterinarian as he likely has an eye infection and will require medication. If it is not an infection, it could be allergies even a scratch across the surface of the eye. His veterinarian will evaluate the eyes using an instrument known as an ophthalmoscope and may place a drop of dye in each as well. In the meantime, keep the eyes clear of any discharge. It is important to know why Tiger's eyes are painful, to make sure he is treated with the correct medication. He could have an infection, or a scratch/corneal ulcer, among other possibilities. Your vet will be able to identify the problem and make sure he is treated correctly. I do not recommend administering anything over the counter, as it is possible to do harm rather than good. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian right away. I would be concerned about something like glaucoma secondary to the inflammation in the eye. Glaucoma can cause vision loss if it is not treated promptly.
