Is my cat's swollen gland and chronic discharge from cat flu normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 10 months and 2 days old | 11 lbs

Hi, Is it normal for a cat to have a swollen gland one side of his face behind the ear if he got cat flu?.. My kitten had the cat flu when he was 3 months old (10month old now) and somehow it just never really cleared up fully. He always has dark brown crust like discharge from his eyes and nose. It doesn't bother him at all so he isn't actually very sick but somehow minor symptoms aways there even if it isn't serious. If he is a carrier that means he might will have the symptoms all the time?

It is normal for the lymph nodes (which would be in the location you are describing) to swell during times of infection. It appears that poor Sock has a chronic upper respiratory infection, but it's still possible that he can be treated effectively. In order for this to happen, a veterinarian would have to do some testing to find the exact bug that is causing the infection. Once this is discovered, they can provide the appropriate treatment. Sometimes it takes months worth of treatment until it is finally cleared, so stick with their treatment plan provided by the vet and Sock should hopefully be cleared of this infection. I hope that helps and Sock gets better soon.
