Struggling to give cat liquid antibiotics after surgery. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8.9 lbs

My cat had oral surgery with extractions on Thursday. I am having a terrible time trying to get her to take the liquid antibiotics. She won't eat her food if I mix them in and I barely get any in her mouth with the syringe. What if she doesn't get enough?

This is a common problem with cats and it's likely that most of them don't get their full dose due to spitting or accidental wastage. While it's best to make sure she gets the full dose, there will be some effect even if she gets a little. I usually don't prescribe antibiotics for extractions unless there appears to be a bad infection. I'm sure your vet prescribed them for good reason, but you can always call and ask how important they are and let them know that it's nearly impossible to give. They may advise you to stop the medication, or have an alternative solution to the problem. I hope that helps and Vivian gets better soon.
