My dog's diarrhea came back after chicken and rice. Switched too fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 83 lbs

My dog has diarrhea. He acts completely normal. I tried the rice and chicken diet and then switched him to normal food. And then this morning he had it again. Did I give him normal food too soon?

It depends how long you gave him chicken and rice, if you gave it for more than 3 days then it should have been enough time to resolve the problem, if the problems remain he might need antibiotics or other medications, in such a case you should take him to your vet.

Poor Zia! If she has normal stools on chicken and rice but then gets diarrhea again when transitioned slowly back to her regular diet, it's possible there's something in her normal dog food that her GI system isn't tolerating very well. I would suggest talking to your veterinarian about doing a diet trial with a prescription GI diet like Hills i/d or Purina EN, or a hypoallergenic diet like Hills z/d or Purina HA. She may do better on one of these diets if she has a food allergy or intolerance to something in her regular food.
